The object of The Boys’ Brigade is “The advancement of Christ Kingdom
among Boys and the promotion of habits of obedience, reverence,
discipline, self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian
manliness”.
The object has remained unchanged since the inception of the organization, except for the addition of the word “Obedience” in 1893.
- Obedience
Obedience means complying with or being submissive to authority.
Biblically, obedience means to hear, trust, submit and surrender to God and
His word. This is ensuring that instructions of God, parents, officers and
those in authority are obeyed. It is a way to get closer to God. - Reverence
Reverence is a feeling of respect or admiration for someone or something.
It is having a deep respect for God and fellow human beings. For example,
genuflecting (bowing when crossing the aisle or the altar) is to acknowledge the presence of God. Standing at attention when an officer approaches or listening attentively when another person is talking is an act of reverence. - Discipline
Discipline is action or inaction that is regulated to be in line with a
particular system of governance. This is a way of training someone so that
he/she can learn how to control his/her behaviour and obey rules. One must restrain from acts of sin. These include disobeying God’s injunctions, committing fornication, consumption of alcohol, and substance abuse. Immoral behaviours, fighting, and embezzlement of funds meant for the Company or Battalion should also be avoided. - Self-Respect
This is a feeling that one is behaving with honour and dignity. It is having
proper respect for oneself and one’s worth as a person. It means to
acknowledged one’s feelings and rights to live with pride and confidence.
